Abstract

Networks of Life
In the many cells in our body genes, proteins and metabolites work together. As soon as something in this complex network goes wrong, disease may occur. In a flourishing new research field called Systems Biology, we try to better understand how cells work in health and disease. In this thesis, new tools are presented to organize, visualize and analyse how proteins are connected with each other and other functional elements and how they affect the function and behaviour of the cells. By analysing nutrition and obesity studies, it is demonstrated how these new tools can be used to better understand how the processes are connected and how they can be influenced by different drugs and nutrients. This gives pointers for better combined therapies and healthier diets.
