Abstract

Many women and men are unhappy with their bodies – especially with their body weight and shape. This negative body image can have serious consequences for physical and mental health. Therefore, an important question is: What can we do about it? In this PhD project, the researcher conducted a meta-analysis of existing body image interventions. She found that, unfortunately, existing interventions have only small effects on body image. The researcher also investigated novel techniques for improving body image. For example, she showed that body image can improve if people focus on what their bodies can do – rather than how they look.
