Research interests
Selman Aksünger is a PhD candidate in the International and European Law Department at Maastricht University. His thesis concerns the sea-level rise in relation to international law. He research the impact of sea-level rise on a displaced nation's sovereignty rights over its natural resources. His thesis seeks to examine what legal justifications could and should serve as the basis of the continuity of people's sovereignty rights to the natural resources once their territories are submerged. Selman is being supervised by Professor Jure Vidmar and Professor Liesbeth Lijnzaad.
He holds an LL.B. (with honors) from Bahçeşehir University and an LL.M. in Public International Law from Leiden University. He was formerly affiliated with the Kalshoven-Gieskes Forum on IHL (researcher) and the International Criminal Court (Victim Participation and Reparation Section).
For the past four years, Selman has lectured public international law courses and served as the academic coordinator of the Istanbul Center of International Law (ICIL). He is admitted to the Istanbul Bar and licensed to practice law in Turkey.
Generally, Selman’s research interests include the management of resources, international development law, history of international law, international humanitarian and criminal law, Islamic law and its interaction with public international law.
