In this lecture, Dr. Marijn van der Sluis describes and analyzes the framework of European economic governance, as it has developed since the Maastricht Treaty. Economic governance covers the rules and mechanisms of supervision through which the EU aims to influence the fiscal and economic policies of the MS in line with the objectives of Economic and Monetary Union. These rules and mechanisms were in part the product of the euro-crisis, as high debts and deficits were seen as an important contributor to the crisis. But are the rules able to withstand other emergencies in the EU, or will they fall victim to a shift in priorities?
