The impact of parental separation on children’s math and language skills: Evidence from matched longitudinal school survey and register data

This paper examines to what extent the development and intergenerational transmission of basic skills is affected by parental separation. Based on the ‘within-family social capital’ perspective, which states that the transmission of parental resources must occur through meaningful interaction, we expect that the association between parents’ and child’s basic skills is weaker in case of parental separation. To test this, the Intergenerational Transmission of Skills (ITS) dataset is utilized. Preliminary results show that experiencing a parental separation is associated with about one-sixth of a standard deviation lower test score. The intergenerational transmission of language skills is significantly weaker in case of parental separation for both fathers and mothers. The intergenerational transmission of math skills is not affected by parental separation.
