Keynote presentation during STE(A)M: Art as the driving force for STEAM sessions
Given that Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math have been the driving force of the world’s innovative thinking for centuries, integrating the study of the arts within STEM curricula is an innovation capable of revitalising the kind of creativity that young people need to better prepare for future challenges. More and more it is realized that technology, engineering and science are not value-free enterprises, but deeply interrelated with values, human behaviour and culture. Truly successful innovation is not just a question of technical mastery, but depends on a deep understanding of the society from which it springs and in which it is supposed to function. That is why it is important to integrate the study of the arts within STEM curricula. This can be done by creating flexible, student focused, interdisciplinary bachelors programs in the liberal arts and sciences tradition.
