Revisiting the Market for Lemons: Quality Uncertainty in the Battery-Engine-Vehicle Era

Description

Abstract: The rapid electrification of the automotive industry has spurred the growth of the used battery-powered-electric-vehicle (BEV) market. The depreciation of subsidized BEVs is faster than gasoline powered cars but aligns with diesel powered cars. Based on a dataset of 17,846 cars, we observe much higher ask prices for BEVs. DiD estimates indicate a recall, which serves as a proxy for an information shock, results in a higher price drop for BEVs. An analysis of a quasi-experiment of tax burden convergence indicates that individuals are primarily driven by usage-cost analysis instead of sustainability.
