Living together in a society means constantly dealing with other people, including people who are very different, have different ideas and want different things. To make this work, society must have some basis for community. What could this basis be? The conservative answer is culture and tradition. The liberal answer is toleration. However, both have answers have their limitations, as is painfully apparent from many of today’s social problems. Another, better answer is universal love; people in a society should love each other, and these loving relations can sustain society and solidarity in these trying times. Hence it is important to promote universal love in society, and explore how this can best be achieved.
