Description

The 2022 Dutch National SDG Barometer, utilizing a comprehensive survey of 316 Dutch organizations, including companies, government bodies, educational institutions, and not-for-profits, provides key insights into the Netherlands’ progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the 2030 deadline nears. A notable finding is the high level of SDG awareness, with 91% of organizations acknowledging their familiarity with these goals. However, the depth of engagement varies, as 64% of organizations plan to intensify their SDG integration in the next two years, while about 11% have not and do not plan to integrate these goals, highlighting a gap between awareness and actual implementation. The survey reveals a shift in responsibility to senior management, but integrating sustainability and the SDGs into broader strategies remains challenging for many. There is a significant expectation for government to play a more active role in promoting SDG adoption, with 80% seeking greater involvement, indicating a need for stronger policy support. The survey shows a selective focus on specific SDGs, such as Good Health and Well-Being, and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, while others like Life Below Water and Zero Hunger are less emphasized, underscoring the challenge of balancing global objectives with local relevance. A major challenge identified is measuring indirect impacts, particularly for goals not directly related to an organization’s core operations. The Barometer advocates for a more interconnected approach to SDG adoption, emphasizing deeper organizational integration of sustainability practices, improved policy coordination, sharing best practices, heightened awareness, and a more holistic SDG approach with higher ambition levels.
