Description

This workshop explores the ethical dimension of smart city technologies and discuss concrete design-led approaches for safeguarding human, social and democratic values in smart cities. Big data, algorithms and digital platforms create vast opportunities to improve the efficiency of urban systems but pose significant ethical questions. This workshop will use the electric vehicle charging system as case study and explore how designerly approaches can create more transparency about the workings of smart urban infrastructures. Using the “transparent charging station”, a design concept of a smart EV charging station developed by Elaad and Alliander, we explore how “algorithmic transparency” can open up smart algorithms to public scrutiny.
