Concentration and Crisis in Small Island Economies

Activity: Talk or presentation / Performance / SpeechesTalk or presentation - at conferenceAcademic

Description

In small island economies that are strongly dependent on tourism, the wider economy, and especially the banking sector, is vulnerable to sharp downturns in tourism-related activity. This narrow economic base means that shocks in one sector can quickly spread across firms, households, public finances, and financial institutions. In this presentation, we use Aruba as a case example to explore how such concentration affects resilience in times of crisis and what this implies for managing systemic risk in small island economies
