26th International Conference of the Society for Human Ecology : Ecology, Politics, and Justice: Working Towards the Pluriverse

Description

In this panel, we gather a set of contributions which attempt to politicize ecological emotions and affects. In reaction to the affective turn in social sciences of the past two decades, and in light of the prolific literature which focuses on the emotions of climate change, ecological affects or ‘Earth-emotions’, we want to emphasize the possible depoliticizing effects of narrow and individualizing affective approaches, while also highlighting the potential of exploring affects to complexify and deepen our understanding of broader structures of domination, power-relations and socio-economic material environments. With this interdisciplinary panel, we hope to provide a reflexive discussion on the ‘state of the play’ of the growing scholarship at the crossroads between social sciences and environmental studies which focuses on affects and emotions. The presentations will share approaches to ecological destruction that are resolutely political in their scope and ambition, bringing into dialogue social psychology, the sociology of emotions, critical psychoanalysis, and feminist affect studies.
